This is a new project in Guatemala. The aim of this project is to work with Wuqu’ Kawoq, an NGO working in Guatemala, to design and implement a potable water delivery system in Socorro, a small indigenous Mayan village of about 400 inhabitants. Wuqu’ Kawoq has been working in this and similar villages in this region of Guatemala providing medical care, primarily to children. Despite the village’s proximity to a major international highway, infrastructure is severely underdeveloped. Few people in the village have latrines or other waste disposal systems, and in most cases channeled toward the river, which also serves as a drinking water sources for approximately 75% of the village. The other 25% have short, usually unlined earthen wells of 3-5 meters in depth. See a close-up of the above map.
