5th Board Meeting 02/14/2008
Progressive Career Fair - Tossing out our current PCF structure was discussed. Instead of operating under the umbrella of the Spring Career Fair, we could have our own events with these companies and be able to give students more time to discuss issues with company representatives.
International Health Conference and P3 Conference - Click on the links to learn more. Talk to Katia by Tuesday if you want to go.
Uganda - Good joh getting that application done.
Fundraising Banquet and Auction - It's today. Volunteers are welcome to show up after 3:00. Everyone should come. It's going to be our biggest on-campus fundraiser ever.
YMCA - We should put "EWB-UIUC is an organization of the YMCA" on our flyers. We can publicize our events on the YMCA's listserv. Email Kasey at kasey@universityymca.org to request to add things to their weekly newsletter. The YMCA has a bunch of events coming up. E-mail Suhail if you want to help.
Chicago Professional Chapter - Brainstorm on how can they help us. We're also going to request that they put our project leaders in touch with their two most qualified members in that field.
Local FAC - We're still planning to assemble a local Faculty-Technical Advisory Committee
Project Focus - We're going to try a new format for our monthly, organization-wide meetings. Titled "Project Focus," they'll feature one of our projects, have much more technical content, and target a more specific audience. We'll serve coffee and cookies instead of pizza.
Board Meeting Transparency - There was a heated discussion about whether our board meetings should become open to the public. We finally decided that someone who wishes to bring something to discussion at our board meetings should first e-mail an officer (the president?) and have the item added to the week's agenda, which from now on will be posted before board meetings on the website in the Executive/minutes section.

-Went shopping on Saturday and purchased some materials for the EOH dollhouse demo AND got to play with both a laser-equipped chop saw (accuracy limited only by brownian motion) and a guide-less tablesaw (accuracy limited by my love for my phalanges)
-Met with Katia briefly on Sunday to talk about the EOH demos and with the intention of building, but, alas, low attendance and insufficient tack length presented problems
-EOH Committee Meeting on Monday- continued discussions on demo designs and developed a revised shopping list
-Politely asked the EOH part of EC to bequeath $$ unto us. We were granted $200
-Politely asked our MSEB contact to confirm our exhibit location. We got our usual, super-sweet spot (not to be confused with UIUC corn...)
-Sent out Meeting Seconds
-Actually registered our exhibit for the Hands-On judging category

. Victoria Kaplan of Food and Water Watch will probably be presenting on the 13th, we will most likely co-sponsor with CUCPJ, SECS. Prof. Ken Salo who teaches courses on Social, economic justice will also be at the talk and possibly some sort of public official will also be present.
. YMCA activist conference: Maren, Laura and I participated in the "picking your issue" workshop this morning. reps from Greenpeace, Students for Economic Justice, Amnesty Int'l and Student Farmworker Alliance were there. It provided good perspective on the choices we make in terms or projects and outreach.
· Checklists: No progress this week, just need to post on website at some point.
· Mission Statement: No progress made on this yet.
· Professional Advisor- I have been communicating with:
George Jamison who is PE working near Springfield and is interested in mentoring and technical assistance for projects.
Daniel Harpstead who is on the Board of Governers for EWB-USA, he is going to help us find other PE's in the region.
· International Conference- I have registered us. Me, Jen, Sean, Jordan, Steph, Cheryl, Tessa and Keith.

Jen's update
- Reply from Deans: Only talked about PCF stuff. Mandy and I are meeting with Sarah Zehr from ECS on Monday to talk about PCF expansion.
- Engineering Initiatives, Sustainable Energy Forum: Meeting set up for next week.
- Follow up on Volunteer Illini, are we collaborating with them? I haven't contacted them yet. I'll check into it.
- List of non-engineering skills: this is slowly coming. I need to get some feedback from project and committee leaders.
- Eco-lab: Katrin Klingenberg will give a talk the first week of April. Ecological Design Consortium and EWB will co-sponsor the talk. She, Suhail, and I met on Friday to talk about collaboration. Things look good...
- Kathleen Robbins talk: contacted YMCA about reserving latzer hall. will contact SECS and Amnesty International about co-sponsoring. Can whoever goes to the YMCA board meeting ask if any other groups want to get in on this?
- Nuclear power plant tour: at the career fair, I conned some guy into giving us a tour of his nuclear power plant in Clinton, IL. We need to pick a date.
- Recycling lecture: needs to be rescheduled. When?!

Steph's Update
Natural Cooling Methods
We had 3 new members last week. They all seem interested & asked for assignments if they couldn't make the next meeting. Donging is setting up the software so that we can use it easily. I'll continue as project lead for a little while. Another meeting is scheduled for today.
Solar Phone Charger
Jen, Keith & I will have lunch w/ Kathleen on March 12th to talk about the solar phone charger project. Kathleen has sent us some info via email about the needs of the project (mostly developing a controller, I think).

· Fundraising schedule
5 k Tenativly Scheduled for the 7th of April. We will also be doing a raffle at some point during the semester. Thats more up in the air. Red nose day will happen around the end of april. More details in the future. Jason is working on Fundraising packets for the 5k. Laura and I are going to talk in further detail about pop machines on Monday.

Working on this, will get together sometime this weekend.

E's Update
PCF feedback
The Progressive Career Fair went wonderfully. A couple of companies loved the idea. Some were not as enthused but all the companies we chose participated. We kept the signs we created to use them for next year if they want to participate again. Mandy and Jen compiled a list of things that needed to be changed for next year and things that would have been done better. Overall, WE ROCKED THE CAREER FAIR!
Professor Lunches
Suhail and I contacted 5 professors today looking for someone to eat with next week. I am still waiting for a response from 4 of them but one cannot make it next week. He is however very excited about the idea and cannot wait to make a date.
Events Website
The events website now has a submenu! I am still learning about putting it all together. I plan on posting minutes and a creative picture of our committee! I am working on it and it is slowly coming together.
Suhail's Update
Emailed person at Eco Labs, meeting them tomorrow. They seem enthusiastic about working with us, and may be willing to speak for us as well.
Emailed someone at Asha - no response yet
No Action yet on CRPC. I checked out how the weatherization program works, and it appears to be government grant based, with the work done by independent contractors. Hence I doubt we will fit in, but I will contact them tomorrow or Monday.

I especially need pictures from Natural Cooling if they have any.
There will be a copy available in the office soon for people to correct, comment on, judge or whatever, and I'll be notifing you if your image or likeness appears in the pamphlet about whether or not thats cool.
Also about the pamphlet, if anyone has a good quote, preferably a EWB member quote about how ewb is awesome or whatever, please email me.
