Local Projects Meeting Minutes 3 November 2005
Local Projects Minutes for 3 November 2005
The local projects meeting last week went pretty well. Here are some of the highlights:
Various project options:
Low Income Energy Assistance with the Urban League-More along the lines of a traditional EWB-Project, but difficult to get together-Would involve some technical work
Youth Outreach - speaking at schools, Scout meetings and Boys & Girls club-We could use the same activities and exhibits that we use for this for the museum.
Orpheum Childrens Museum exhibit-Possibly the same thing as our exhibit for the Chicago science fair-We are going to the Exhibits Committee meeting to learn more about the exhibits process tomorrow night (Tuesday). We'll meet in the IU Circle Drive at 6:40. RSVP before noon tomorrow if you're going and let me know if you can drive. See the website for more details on this event.
Chicago Science Fair-We are the only University chosen to represent this years theme, renewable energy, along with big corporations like Shell, BP and Ford.-Something nice and interactive would do well. Perhaps solar cells which are simple to build in a short time.
Some ideas include-Easily built solar cell (interactive activity for Chicago and outreach)-Simple wind turbine that has a plexiglass side and can be turned by hand to light up a light bulb or something (display for Children's museum, Chicago and outreach)-Microhydro- tall column of water powering a light bulb (display for Children's museum, Chicago and outreach)-We could always bust out the old bike-generator in a pinch-Lots of posters and displays (we may not be able to have a solar oven inside, but if we've got they're attention, might as well teach them something). We can do this later.
Ivan, Dan and other folks on the wind turbine project, could you guys look into how easy it would be to make a little wind turbine. Something that someone just turns by hand for a demonstration. Not much fancier than a couple of magnets and a coil of wire. A cost estimate would be great, if at all possible.
Everyone remember to get back to me about the trip to the Orpheum!
Joining EWB-UIUC's website will soon require membership. If you aren't a member yet, feel free to join by contacting an officer to pay the fee.
