Project Description: The goal of the Solar Cooker project is to develop a stored energy solar cooker.  Specifically, it will collect heat during the day, and use it for cooking in the evening.  In this way, solar cooking will become available to anyone, without a major change in cooking habits.  The major difference is that you can cook indoors, and at any time, neither of which a conventional solar cooker allows.  This project is being done in conjunction with the Arial Foundation which already has a presence in Afienya, Ghana, and Ensenada, Mexico.

Natural Cooling on Hiatus

The slow process of resolving software licensing issues is holding the Natural Cooling project from continuing work currently, so the project is on hiatus.

Seth Hanson is leading this project, and will continue to do so after licensing issues are resolved.

A Sustainable Water Development Program in Rural Nigeria

Note: this website is currently experiencing large changes, please bear with us.

Welcome to the Enugu State Project! This initiative seeks to develop a sustainable water source of clean water for the village of Adu Achi in Southeastern Nigeria, serving as a pilot for community-based water management in the area. Currently the village relies upon distant and contaminated surface water sources, travelling up to 3km almost 6 times per day in the dry season.

A site assessment was completed in August of 2006, followed by two implementation trips in the winter and summer of 2008.  The project is in the process of designing a ground water gravity flow system to service many areas in the community, as well as several individual households.  In addition to technical feasibility, this project emphasizes community organization, well and system management, improved health, education, and sustainability.

Project Information

An Engineers Without Borders project team, under the direction of Professor Tami Bond, is currently developing a small, economical field emissions sensor that will measure carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM) concentrations, providing real-time data on combustion efficiency.

The Maharashtra project is aimed at improving the lives of the residents of Maharashtra, India, and more recently Karnataka, India, by enhancing their ability to access renewable energy from bicycle and wind generators as well as photovoltaic arrays. EWB members at the University of Illinois work on projects related to power circuitry to try and meet efficiency goals set by an engineer in the field. All projects include hands-on circuit construction and testing.

The Maharashtra team is seeking electrical engineering students at any level who are interested in circuits or power electronics and would like to get hands-on experience while working for a charitable cause.

The Guatemala Water Project has been working with Wuqu’ Kawoq, a Guatemalan NGO, since Fall 2007 to design and implement a potable water delivery system in Socorro, Guatemala. Socorro is a small village of about 450 indigenous Maya people where Wuqu’ Kawoq has been working and in other nearby villages to help provide medical care, primarily to children.
