Introduction:

Welcome to the Events Committee!

This committee is responsible for organizing EWB activities in the Champaign-Urbana area. These include educational events like lectures and workshops, outreach events at local high schools and children’s museums, and social events like movies, bar crawls, and barbecues. Events in the past have included building a solar cooker, teaching Kids at Orpheum museum about fuel cells and solar energy, and lectures on the topics of green building, sustainability on campus, and global water resources. But the possibilities are endless!

We are looking for people who like to have fun, and want to see events they want to go to! Come plan the various social and educational events that EWB has on campus! We meet weekly in the EWB office (110C Engineering Hall) on Tuesdays at 6:00 PM. Stop by or attend an event!

EWB Spring Barcrawl

Posted by Jason Jewell on Mon, 04/21/2008 - 11:20 in

Date:  Thursday, April 24, 2008

Time:  8:00 PM - 2:00 AM

Location:  Starts at Murphy's

Are you excited about cramming for finals?  There's no better way to start off a long string of study nights than with a night on the town with your EWB buddies.  Talk about sustainability and global water demand projections or the irony of the exothermic condensation of water vapor on your Coke that's freezing your hand.  T-shirts are $10 but completely optional (they're from last semester).  If you feel we don't deserve to have to stare at the shirts lying around our office for another year, tell Laura Fierce (lfierce2 [at] gmail [dot] com) your shirt size preference.

8:00 - 9:00  Murphy's

9:00 - 10:00  Brother's

10:00 - 11:00  Firehaus

11:00 - 12:00  Legend's

12:00 - 1:00  Joe's

When: Tuesday, April 8th at 7:00 PM

Nicole Lamers is the former coordinator of the Global Studies in Education program in the College of Education.  In July of 2008, she lead a team of 15 teachers to conduct a study in Pretoria, South Africa, where they probed the issue of water on the governmental, academic and community levels.  Her talk will explore the political and cultural dimensions of the global water crisis, by providing perspective through studies on water issues such as the one in South Africa.  This discussion will focus on the specific issues of development and community participation.

The event will be followed by an EWB-sponsored game of capture the flag on the main quad.

Tour of GE Biomass Power Plant

General Electric (GE) Energy is converting a Sylvan Power Company plant to a Biomass plant, powered by wood chips.

The facility was constructed in 1996 to burn garbage (otherwise slated for landfill) from the South Side of Chicago, to generate steam to power a steam turbine. The plant generated most of its income, not from supplying electricity, but by accepting garbage. However, in 2000, the State of Illinois changed environmental laws, and the plant went bankrupt.  GE is now converting the plant to generate power from wood chips (3-in in length or less) created from scrap lumber and trees. This will result in a greenhouse-negative facility, the conversion of which is to be completed by the end of 2008.

The facility coordinator is offering a guided site visit for approximately 20-30 University of Illinois students and faculty on April 26th.
